We were saddened to hear of the passing of Phil Everly on Friday, January 3, 2014. Due to complications associated with COPD On January 3, 2014, Phil Everly died at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, California, just two weeks prior to his 75th birthday.
Phil, together with his older brother, Don, comprised the Everly Brothers, whose melodic and harmonic stylings would influence several generations of rock, country, and folk musicians, and were among the first class of ten artists inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. Phil and Don’s acoustic guitar rhythms were so magnetic and compelling that Gibson Guitar created the Everly Brothers’ Flattop Guitar, and, according to the Gibson Guitar website, from 1962 to 1971, only 488 Everly Brothers models were made.
Phil Everly also wrote “When Will I Be Loved” which became the last hit by the Everly Brothers, rising to Number 8 on the charts in 1960. The song was also released by Linda Ronstadt in March of 1975, on her album “Heart Like A Wheel”, whereupon it reached #2 on The Billboard Charts.
